Halifax has the dubious distinction of having the highest daily parking rates in the country, according to a recently released survey.
Drivers pay on average $18.50 a day to park downtown either on the street or in a garage, says Boston-based real estate consultant Colliers International.
Colliers surveyed cities in the United States and Canada, comparing monthly unreserved parking rates, monthly reserved and daily rates.
The closest Canadian city to Halifax was Ottawa, where drivers pay an average of $16.05 a day to park. Toronto and Montreal were $16 and $14.50 respectively. The cheapest daily rate was the $6 drivers pay in Regina and Saskatoon.
But when it came to monthly rates, Halifax fell to third cheapest. Drivers in Halifax pay an average of $141 a month to park downtown compared to the $417 Torontonians pay for a reserved spot downtown.
The most expensive daily parking rate in the U.S. was Honolulu, where drivers pay an average of $32.75 (US). Drivers in downtown Manhattan pay a comparatively cheap $20.40.
