The Toronto Police Services Board is looking at using photo radar, along with more red-light cameras and cameras to catch motorists using designated bus lanes, in an attempt to free up front-line police officers for other duties.

Toronto Police Chief Julian Fantino supports the board's move as long as it's not simply a cash grab.

"I don't agree with photo radar for the sake of raising money . . . but I do think it has some relevance in terms of enhancing our traffic safety initiatives," he said in a news report last week.

Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton are among the few Canadian cities that use photo radar. Earlier this year, photo radar grabbed headlines after Premier Dalton McGuinty mused about bringing it back to the province's highways to generate money to help battle the deficit.
